When is a mammologist consultation needed
Scheduled examinations
Doctors recommend not waiting for symptoms, but getting examined regularly:
- at 20-30 years old — every 3 years;
- at 30-40 years old — every 2 years;
- after 40 years old — annually, mammography is added to the examination.
Unscheduled examinations
- when hormonal therapy is prescribed
- when planning a pregnancy or its recent termination
- for any breast injuries
- when preparing for plastic surgeries.
Symptoms that require a visit to a mammologist
- appearance of palpable nodules, lumps or depressions in the breast
- painful sensations in the breasts and armpits
- enlarged lymph nodes
- discharge from the nipples
- atypical changes in nipple shape: retraction, protrusion, etc.
- changes in breast shape that are externally noticeable
- changes in the skin of the breast, engorgement of the skin with blood
- appearance of non-healing sores, hematomas on the skin of the breast
- painful sensations and discomfort during self-palpation (pressing with fingers).
