Laparotomic removal of ovarian tumors and cysts (open surgery)

Safe treatment of complex ovarian pathologies

Most ovarian surgeries today are performed through small incisions (laparoscopically). However, in gynecology, there are serious clinical situations when laparotomy (open abdominal surgery) becomes the only safe and correct choice to preserve a woman’s life and health. At St. Luke’s Clinic, such complex interventions are performed by gynecological surgeons with many years of experience in treating tumor processes.

Why is open surgery sometimes necessary? (Indications)

Laparotomic access (through an incision in the abdominal wall) provides the surgeon with a wide view of the pelvic organs and the ability to act as radically and quickly as possible. The operation is prescribed in the following cases:

  1. Giant sizes of cysts and tumors: Neoplasms reaching 10, 15, or even 20+ centimeters in diameter (e.g., mucinous or serous cystadenomas). It is physically impossible and unsafe to remove them through small punctures.

  2. Suspicion of ovarian cancer (oncological vigilance): The main rule of oncological surgery is that the tumor must be removed whole, within its own capsule. If the cyst ruptures during an attempt to remove it through a puncture, malignant cells can spread throughout the abdominal cavity. Open access guarantees clean and safe removal (ablastics).

  3. Cyst rupture with massive bleeding: An emergency condition where every minute counts, and the surgeon needs immediate access to stop internal bleeding.

  4. Severe adhesive process: Dense fusion of the tumor with the intestine or manipulations in severe forms of endometriosis.

How is the operation performed at St. Luke’s Clinic?

We understand all the fears of patients regarding abdominal surgery, so we provide the highest level of medical and psychological comfort.

  • Anesthesia: The intervention is performed under deep general anesthesia. Modern drugs guarantee the absence of pain, hallucinations, and easy awakening.

  • Surgical access: Depending on the size of the tumor, the doctor performs a horizontal (above the pubis) or vertical (along the midline of the abdomen) incision. A horizontal incision eventually becomes almost invisible under underwear.

  • Careful removal: The surgeon carefully isolates the tumor. If the pathology is benign, we do everything possible to preserve healthy ovarian tissue (enucleate the cyst). In the case of a malignant or extensive process, the affected ovary is completely removed.

  • Histology: The removed neoplasm is necessarily sent to the laboratory for accurate determination of its nature.

Rehabilitation and care in our hospital

After laparotomy, the patient requires special care. At St. Luke’s Clinic (Banchery village), all conditions are created for your peaceful recovery:

  • Comfortable European-standard wards.

  • Round-the-clock monitoring of vital signs and attentive medical staff.

  • Effective postoperative pain management schemes.

Discharge home usually occurs on day 4–6 after surgery. Full tissue healing and return to a normal rhythm of life (with limited physical activity) takes about 1.5–2 months.

A complex diagnosis is not a verdict, but a reason to contact professionals. Sign up for a detailed consultation with the surgeons of St. Luke’s Clinic.
