When is a dermatologist consultation needed

  • skin rashes: both pale and bright in color
  • redness, flaky, itchy areas of skin, swelling
  • areas of skin that are constantly wet or inflamed;
  • boils, pustules
  • a large number of pimples and blackheads
  • the appearance of new warts and moles in large numbers, changes in the color and size of existing ones
  • changes in the appearance of nails (color, thickness, shape), severe brittleness;
  • severe hair loss, damage, increased brittleness, oiliness or dryness.

How to prepare for a dermatologist's examination

For facial rashes. Do not use decorative cosmetics. To avoid distorting the clinical picture, remove makeup no later than 2 hours before the doctor’s appointment. Do not wash your face with special products on the day of the appointment; water is sufficient. Also, do not use care products (creams, tonics, lotions) and external medicinal preparations. This will keep the skin in its original state and allow the doctor to more accurately determine the problem.

For body rashes. Do not use shower gel, soap, and other care products, as well as medicinal preparations on the day of the appointment. If possible, it is better to avoid showering for 1-2 days.

For hair and scalp problems. Keep your hair in a “dirty” state for 1-2 days before the appointment — do not wash your hair with shampoos and balms. This is necessary for the doctor to assess how the sebaceous glands are working and if there are any formations on the scalp. For some dermatological hair tests, the hair should also remain unwashed. Do not use hair care products and styling products for 1-2 days before the appointment.

For nail problems. Do not use decorative and medicinal nail polish, as well as local medicinal preparations on the day of the appointment. Do not cut your nails 4-5 days before the appointment so that they have time to grow a little. This is necessary for the doctor to be able to take a sample for fungus.

Bring with you to the dermatology center the results of previous examinations, doctors’ conclusions, and other medical documents.

Make a list of medications you are currently taking or have recently taken: the doctor will definitely ask about them.

Remember if the exacerbation of disease symptoms depends on the season, weather conditions, well-being, and other factors. Your observations may be useful to the doctor for diagnosis.

Prepare questions you would like to discuss with the doctor.
