Puncture of the abdominal cavity through the posterior vaginal fornix (medical name — culdocentesis) is a highly accurate diagnostic, and sometimes therapeutic, manipulation. Main indications for puncture:
Suspicion of ectopic pregnancy: If the tube has ruptured or the pregnancy has terminated, blood spills into the abdominal cavity. Puncture helps to detect this instantly.
