Laparoscopic tubectomy is a surgical procedure to remove one or both fallopian tubes. At St. Luke’s Clinic, we perform this intervention using laparoscopy — through small incisions in the abdomen, without a wide cut. This allows for the preservation of body aesthetics, minimization of pain, and reduction of the recovery period to 1–2 days.
When is fallopian tube removal necessary?
The decision to remove an organ is always made carefully. Our surgeons recommend tubectomy in cases where the tube has lost its function and poses a threat to a woman’s health:
- Ectopic pregnancy: If the fertilized egg has implanted in the tube, its preservation is often impossible or dangerous (risk of recurrent ectopic pregnancy). The surgery eliminates the threat of rupture and internal bleeding.
- Hydrosalpinx: Accumulation of fluid in the tube due to chronic inflammation. This fluid is toxic to the embryo and can flow into the uterus, hindering pregnancy.
- Preparation for IVF (in vitro fertilization): It has been proven that the removal of damaged tubes with hydrosalpinx increases the success rate of IVF by 2-3 times.
- Pyosalpinx: Purulent inflammation of the tube that does not respond to antibiotic treatment.
Features of the surgery: we preserve the ovaries
It is important to understand: tubectomy is the removal of only the tube. The ovary, which produces hormones and eggs, remains untouched. This means that the woman’s hormonal balance does not change, and the menstrual cycle is preserved.
- If one tube is removed: With a second healthy tube, a woman can become pregnant naturally.
- If both tubes are removed: Pregnancy is possible through IVF, and due to the absence of the source of inflammation, the chances of success will be very high.
