diagnoses and treats diseases of the digestive system, which consists of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder. The parts of the GIT are the oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines. Patients consult a gastroenterologist with complaints of any digestive problems and painful sensations in the abdomen.
When is a gastroenterologist consultation needed
- pain in any part of the abdomen
- heartburn in the throat and esophagus
- belching
- nausea, vomiting
- abdominal bloating, rumbling sensation, excessive gas production
- stool disorders (diarrhea, constipation, blood and mucus in stool, very dark stool)
- poor appetite, rapid weight loss, weakness and dizziness
- brittle nails and hair, angular cheilitis
- skin rashes, jaundice or other discoloration
- taste in the mouth: metallic, acidic or bitter
- bad breath, even when teeth are healthy.
